The Massachusetts Lottery is debating on whether it should offer residents of the state the ability to buy lottery tickets and play other selected games online. The decision to review this is down to a number of factors.
The ease with which players can already buy a variety of lottery tickets online means that any lottery that does not have an online presence will find that its business will erode.
Massachusetts State Treasure Steve Grossman has pointed this fact out along with the fact that the Justice Department has already last December allowed for State Lotteries to sell tickets online via credit card.
An increase in play on the Massachusetts Lottery will mean extra funds for the state to distribute to towns and cities in the state.
The major concern in regards to an online lottery in the state is that some players tend to get into trouble when making purchases via credit card. The use of credit cards is being examined and a report on the viability of moving the state lottery online will be made in due course by a task force.
At this time we can only voice our opinion on the matter and hope that the state does move its lottery online. As proponents of Responsible Gambling there are methods that can be used to restrict problem gamblers. The UK has to a large extent implemented a successful responsible gambling policy.
It might be good for the Massachusetts Lottery to take a look at this. In addition it will also give the lottery an online presence and allow it to sell other game tickets like Keno and Scratch Cards.
We look forward to reporting on this matter in due course.
