The Big Lottery Fund which is the part of the UK National Lottery that distributes funds to relevant causes is raising the fury of Gay Rights activists with some of the distribution of its funds.
According to reports, The Big Lottery Fund has distributed lottery funds to religious organizations that have gone on to distribute Anti Gay literature online. Gay Rights activists are protesting at the distribution of funds calling it the promotion of homophobia.
According to the report The Guardian Newspaper has released a report that links Christian, Muslim and Jewish organizations that received funds from The Big Lottery Fund with online homophobia. The Big Lottery Fund has gone on to defend itself and its record in a statement about how many groups it funds and how it all benefits the social fabric of the country.
This to us is all a bit of a storm in a tea cup. Are these religious organizations promoting hatred or doing anything illegal. If so then Gay Rights activists like Peter Tatchell should seek legal redress for the issues raised. If not then they need to realize that most religious organizations are going to be taking an anti gay stance as it does not fit in with their preachings and outlook on life.
Does this really mean anything at the end of the day ? In the UK being gay and being accepted is not a unique thing. Most people are totally unfazed by it and accept that this is the world that we live in.
We think that The Big Lottery Fund does a good job and the mere fact that it handles 40% of all Lottery Fund distributions means that not all of its donations are going to meet with the approval of all the people. It has responded to the The Guardian report in an article on its blog. According to Peter Tatchell the article is disingenuous in its response. I guess some people are simply never happy.
The Big Lottery Fund has done some amazing work in restoring and protecting parts of the cultural heritage of the UK , in addition its focus is on society as a whole and we are sure that there are going to be some issues raised by different groups. Our advice is to get on with it. Life that is. Buy a Lottery ticket and stop moaning so much.
